Description

Malcolm X was an influential civil rights activist who championed Black empowerment and self-determination. As a young man, he drifted into a life of petty crime. While in prison, he discovered ‘The Nation of Islam’ and converted. When he was released, he became one of the organization’s most prominent spokespersons. He passionately advocated for Black self-reliance, a separation from White society, and the pursuit of human rights ‘by any means necessary’. In 1964, Malcolm broke away from ‘The Nation of Islam’ and embarked on a pilgrimage to Mecca. The experience led him to embrace Orthodox Sunni Islam. and adopt a broader vision of universal human rights and global unity. His departure from ‘The Nation of Islam’ and his growing differences with its leader Elijah Muhammad, contributed to rising tensions. In 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated while delivering a speech in Harlem. As a teenager, I remember seeing those images in ‘Look Magazine’. They were graphic and deeply disturbing.
