Description
Frederick Douglass was a former runaway slave, who became the leading spokesman for Black Abolition and Civil Rights in the nineteenth century. He was a powerful public speaker. In speeches, Douglass would playfully, yet seriously, frame his escape as a robbery, declaring, ‘I appear before you this evening as a thief and a robber. I stole this head, these limbs, this body from my master, and ran off with them.’ He pressed and advised Abraham Lincoln on policy relating to Black soldiers, Emancipation, and Civil Rights, leading to the passage of The Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery in The United States. Frederick Douglass was the most photographed man of his time. I am sure that he recognized the benefits of public exposure to help bolster the cause of Black Liberation, Equality, and Human Dignity. He was a very Good and a Great man.
